Alexander McComas was born near Bel Air in Harford County on February 27, 1821,
a son of Preston McComas and was named after his grandfather. At the age of 13 his father
brought him to Baltimore and placed him with Charles C.C. O’Brien to learn arms manufacturing.
He remained with O’Brien for six years and , upon the death of his master, was bound to an
un-named simth to finish his remaining three years. In July of 1843 he established his own
business at 51 South Calvert Street. He became one of the Monumental City’s most prolific
producers. During craftsmanship competitions at the Maryland Institute and the Metropolitan
Mechanics’ Institute he won many awards. In 1844 he married Mary A. Hahn. There are only two
known apprentices to McComas which have come to light: John Clenney and Oscar Johnson. His son,
Harry H. McComas, was associated with him in the business.
